How often should you actually clean everything?

· 2 min read

Cleaning schedules online tend to describe a home nobody lives in. Here's a realistic version: what genuinely needs doing, how often, and what you can safely leave.

Daily — about 15 minutes total

That's the entire daily list. Anything more ambitious is what fails first when you're tired.

Weekly — about an hour, split between you

Monthly

Every three to six months

Things people clean far more than necessary

Worth knowing, because it buys back time: walls, ceilings and radiators need attention roughly once a year. Skirting boards can wait months. Wooden furniture rarely needs polishing more than a few times a year.

Do the daily list reliably and the monthly list becomes much smaller. Skip it and no amount of deep cleaning compensates.

Adjust for your actual home

Multiply toward the frequent end if you have pets, small children, allergies, or four flatmates sharing one bathroom. Relax it if you're two people out at work all day. A schedule you follow at 70% beats a perfect one you abandon in a fortnight.
